覆屋

A structure primarily built to protect the main shrine building, enclosing it from the outside.
There are various types, ranging from those that completely enclose the shrine to those that only have a roof with no walls.
Many are also built connected to the worship hall.
In Nagano Prefecture, where heavy snowfall is common, the majority of main shrine buildings are housed within an enclosure.
Most of these enclosures are locked, so it's necessary to contact the administrator in advance to view the main shrine.
