The Banshi-sha Shrine, an auxiliary shrine of Kitano Tenmangu, is one of the "Three Rare Torii Gates of Kyoto".
Located between the first and second torii gates of Kitano Tenmangu, Banshi-sha enshrines the mother of Sugawara no Michizane, the main deity of Kitano Tenmangu.
Among the three rare torii gates, the most unusual shape is the Mitsubashira Torii at "Kaiko-no-Yashiro", but the stone torii gate of Banshi-sha, constructed in the Kamakura period, is also well known.
Designated as a National Important Art Object, this torii gate features lotus flower petals carved into the bases of its side pillars.
The gaku-buchi (framed tablet) is also uniquely constructed, piercing through the shimagi (tie beam) beneath the kasagi (top lintel).
