大将軍八神社
Yagami Shrine is located in the narrow, labyrinthine Daishogun district of Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City.
The enshrined deity is Susanoo no Mikoto, worshipped as the Daishogun, and the shrine was originally built as a guardian for the Heian-kyo capital.
Originally called Daishogun-do, it was later renamed Daishogun-sha and finally became Daishogun Yagami Shrine during the Meiji period.
In addition to Daishogun, eight other child deities are also enshrined here.
Daishogun is a star deity from Onmyodo, specifically Ten Daishogun, who governs directions, making the shrine a popular place for protection against misfortune related to construction, travel, and relocation.
The shrine houses 80 sacred statues that have been designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
These statues, believed to have been made during the Heian period, all depict male deities, some wearing armor or ceremonial robes.
Although some statues are damaged, it is rare to find 80 statues gathered in a single shrine.
At the entrance of the shrine stands a stone Myojin Torii gate, leading to the main shrine building directly ahead.
The worship hall features an Irimoya-zukuri roof with a gable, and its simple design includes a rear enclosure.
Fitting for a shrine dedicated to the deity governing directions, a monument symbolizing directions is prominently placed in front of the shrine, creating a strong presence.
