白狐稲荷神社
1148 Fumonji, Shiga, Suwa City
Built on an island in the river flowing from Lake Suwa, it is designated as a city cultural property. The river, known as "Goyosui," often flooded, posing challenges. The enshrined deity, Ukanomitama, was brought from Fushimi Inari in Kyoto. Stone and red torii gates are characteristic of Inari shrines, symbolizing prosperity and waterway safety for the area.
The main shrine building, constructed by Itou Kamezo of the Okuma school in 1848, is housed within an outer structure. Unlike the vibrant torii gates, the shrine is unpainted with intricate carvings, making it a beautiful structure. Numerous white fox statues behind the main hall create an impressive scene in the quiet enclosure.
