本郷神社
1877 Hongo, Iijima Town, Kamiina District
Hongo Shrine, located in the Hongo district of Iijima Town, is surrounded by a thick cedar forest below an embankment.
The shrine is also known for the fireworks displayed during its autumn festival.
A large stone shrine marker stands at the entrance.
The shrine grounds are elevated from the road, and after climbing the stone steps and passing through the torii gate, the water basin is on the left, and the worship hall is further up the stone steps.
The worship hall is built in a hirairi style with a gabled roof, and further up, there is a protective structure housing the main shrine.
The main shrine is a three-bay Nagare-zukuri style with a bark roof.
The structural elements are plain three-bracket sets with a central frog-leg strut.
The head of the forward beam is crudely shaped like an elephant, and there are traces of coloring on the structural elements and the beam heads.
The thick pillars suggest a mix of Muromachi period style with Edo period influences, likely built by local craftsmen.
