名古熊神社
1350 Nagokuma, Iida City, Nagano Prefecture
Nagokuma Shrine is located south of the center of Iida City, close to the Iida IC of the Chūō Expressway.
Surrounded by a deep grove of trees, the shrine was established as a prayer site for the Ogasawara clan, who ruled the Iida area in ancient times.
The entrance features a stone myōjin torii, leading to a straight path lined with stone lanterns.
The worship hall (haiden) is a tsumairi gabled structure.
Two plaques are displayed: one for Hachiman Shrine, enshrining Hondawake no Mikoto, and the other for Suwa Shrine, enshrining Takeminakata no Mikoto.
The main hall (honden), which was rebuilt in the early Edo period after being destroyed by Oda Nobunaga’s forces during the Sengoku period, is housed within a large roofed structure behind the worship hall.
As a local guardian shrine, Nagokuma Shrine is deeply revered, and the grounds are filled with towering trees and multiple smaller shrines.
The guardian lion-dogs (komainu) at the entrance were built in Taishō 7 (1918) and still stand proudly today.
