Seimei jinja

Seimei Shrine, located on Horikawa Street in Kyoto, is dedicated to Abe no Seimei, a renowned onmyoji (a practitioner of Japanese esoteric cosmology) from the Heian period. He was a specialist in astronomy and divination, trusted by the nobility of his time. Today, his legendary tales are often depicted in dramas and movies.

Seimei Shrine was established during the reign of Emperor Ichijo, after Abe no Seimei's death in 1005. The shrine's grounds, once expansive, have been reduced over time due to urban development and historical events.

Seimei Shrine is situated in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, on the site of Abe no Seimei's former residence. Its proximity to the Kyoto Imperial Palace and available parking make it easily accessible, attracting many visitors.

Entering through a torii adorned with the pentagram symbol, one can see the Ichijo Modori Bridge and stone statues of shikigami (spiritual entities). The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, contrasting with the tranquil, traditional shrines in Nagano.

On the right, there is a purification fountain and an office. To the left, there is a structure selling omikuji (fortunes) and protective charms. The shrine is adorned with pentagram symbols, and the hall dedicated to Seimei is visible.

The prayer hall, with the main hall and auxiliary shrines behind it, features dark wooden structures adorned with gold pentagrams. Rather than just seeing relics from the Heian period, visitors can feel Seimei's enduring presence and popularity.
