雄山神社
Tateyama town,Toyama Prefecture
Oyama Shrine in Tateyama, one of the major shrines in Etchu Province, was founded in 701 AD when Tateyama was opened and enshrined. At the foot of the mountain in Iwakuraji, the Maedate Shrine and the Main Chu-gu are located, while the Mine Honsha is located at the summit of Mount Oyama in the Tateyama Mountain Range. It is counted as one of Japan's three great sacred mountains and is revered as a syncretic shrine of Shinto and Buddhism, receiving deep reverence from the imperial family and the public.
Located near Iwakuraji Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway Tateyama Line, the founding date of Maedate Shrine is not clear, but it has been revered as the village shrine of Mine Honsha. During the Edo period, it was known as Iwakura Temple, and in the Meiji era, it was called Oyama Shrine's Yōhaisho. White torii gates stand at the east and west entrances of the shrine grounds, leading to a path surrounded by sacred trees, which ends at the Shinmon gate, with the shrine buildings surrounded by fences.
The main hall is a large Irimoya-zukuri (hip-and-gable roof) structure. The building, which is long along the eaves and deep at the entrance, has a large main sanctuary behind it. The main sanctuary is the largest Gokensha Nagare-zukuri (five-bay flowing style) in the Hokuriku region and is designated as a national important cultural property. It is made of unfinished wood, with high wooden steps, and the forward extension uses square pillars, while the main part uses round pillars. Originally thatched with cypress bark, it is now thatched with hinoki bark. It is said that the carvings on the frog-leg struts, the hand-bolt on the forward extension, and the wood nose show the styles of the mid-Muromachi period.
Located at the foot of the Tateyama Mountain Range in Ashikuraji, it is surrounded by a large sacred grove. There is a stone Myojin Torii gate at the entrance. The path leads to a fence with a wide shrine area that has many auxiliary shrines and buildings.
Inside the shrine grounds are the graves of Saeki Ariyori, who opened Tateyama, and the Tateyama Opening Hall, where Saeki Ariyori is enshrined as a deity. The Tateyama Opening Mausoleum, said to be the site where Saeki Ariyori entered Nirvana, has a stone monument.
Tateyama Wakamiya is enshrined as Tagaotenjin, with Amenotajikarao no Mikoto enshrined alongside Saeki Ariyori and Inaba no Sairohiko no Mikoto. Revered as the main shrine of Tagaotenjin, it is believed to grant wishes, ensure victory, and protect against disasters. It is a Hirairi (entrance on the long side) Kirizuma-zukuri (gabled roof) style, with a single square space at the front serving as the entrance.
The prayer hall, known as the Prayer Hall, was called the Ashikura Grand Lecture Hall before the Meiji Restoration. It enshrines the main deities of both main sanctuaries and the 36 subsidiary deities of Tateyama. It serves as a place for conducting ceremonies and learning rituals. The temple-like Irimoya-zukuri building features no prominent carvings, and a simple altar is placed inside.
The Tateyama Omiyaji Shrine at the innermost part of Chugu enshrines Izanagi no Mikoto along with Emperor Monmu and Saeki Ariwashi. Once the center of faith, the shrine was destroyed by falling rocks during the Meiji period and now shares the same architectural style as Wakamiya.
Located at the summit of Mount Oyama in the Tateyama Mountain Range, Mine Honsha stands at an altitude of 3,003 meters and is a very popular mountain, bustling with climbers. A wooden Myojin Torii gate stands behind the shrine office, and the shrine building is located at the top of a narrow stone staircase.
The shrine building, constructed in 1996, is designed in the three-bay flowing style. To protect against strong winds, stones are placed on the roof, and lattice doors are fitted at the front.
