Omiwa jinja

Ōgami Shrine in Ichinomiya City is believed to have been founded by people who moved from Nara Prefecture. Nearby is Masumida Shrine, also considered an ichinomiya (first shrine) of Owari Province. The shrine was relocated to its current site in 1870, after being destroyed in the Sengoku period and temporarily enshrined at the associated Yakushi-ji Temple.

Ichinomiya City was known as Atsuta Shō, an estate of Atsuta Shrine, which is treated as a special case despite being the third shrine of Owari Province. This relationship suggests why Ōgami Shrine is regarded as the ichinomiya.

The shrine grounds are not very large, with a main hall and worship hall where locals often stroll. Although the shrine buildings are not ancient or architecturally notable, visiting the shrine as Owari Province’s ichinomiya is still meaningful.
