南宮大社

Near Sekigahara in Tarui Town, Gifu Prefecture, stands the Nangu Taisha, the Ichinomiya of Mino Province. Also known as "Tsubaki Taisha" due to its camellia grove, this grand shrine enshrines Kanayamahiko-no-Mikoto, the patron deity of metalworking. Revered by the Minamoto clan and others, it was destroyed in the Battle of Sekigahara and rebuilt in 1642 by Tokugawa Iemitsu.

Located along Route 21 and the old Nakasendo highway, the shrine features a large vermilion torii gate by the shinkansen tracks. The important cultural property, the Stone Ring Bridge, leads to the two-storied Romon gate painted in white and red, with guardian deities and lion-dogs housed within.

The spacious, gravel-covered shrine grounds, enclosed by the Romon gate and a fence, house a Yagai, or open-air stage. The Yagai's gabled roof is slightly curved, with decorative carvings on its beams, vividly painted.

The main hall, built in the irimoya style with a plain wood construction, contrasts with the colorful other buildings, exuding a sense of solemnity. Flanked by auxiliary shrines, the main hall stands out for its simplicity. Nangu Taisha's impressive buildings include 18 important cultural properties.
