御上神社
838 Mikami, Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture
Located in Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture, Mikami Shrine enshrines Mount Mikami, also known as "Omi Fuji," as its sacred object.
It is the third shrine of Omi Province, and the Ankunizo clan, who ruled the Yasu district, served as its priests.
In 718, a shrine building was constructed at this site, which was a place of worship for Mount Mikami.
The Romon gate, designated as an important cultural property by the nation, was built in 1365 during the late Kamakura period.
It has a large gabled roof with an imposing, sturdy structure due to the balance between the single and double eaves.
Deities are enshrined on the left and right sides of the gate.
Beyond the Romon gate are the haiden (worship hall) and honden (main hall), with auxiliary shrines on both sides of the honden.
The honden and haiden were built during the Kamakura period. The honden is a "Ho-sangū" structure with a gabled roof, white walls, and lattice windows, combining elements of shrines, temples, and palace architecture into what is called the "Mikami-zukuri" style.
The auxiliary shrines on either side of the honden are Wakamiya Shrine on the left and Sannomiya Shrine on the right.
Both are single-bay nagare-zukuri structures with cypress bark roofs. Though lacking in elaborate carvings or colors, they retain their ancient architectural style.
