吉備津神社
931 Kibitsu, Kita-ku, Okayama, Okayama Prefecture
Ichinomiya Shrine, located on the northwestern northern slope of Kibitsu Hill, on the border between Bitchu and Bizen.
Originally enshrined as the total guardian of the Kibi region, it became the Ichinomiya of Bitchu when Kibi was divided into three provinces.
On the northeastern slope of Kibitsu Hill is Kibitsuhiko Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Bizen Province.
The north entrance of Kibitsu Shrine features the Zuishinmon Gate, designated as an Important Cultural Property by the government.
Built in 1543, the gabled structure is painted in vermilion.
At the end of the stone steps leading up the approach is the main hall combined with the worship hall.
Due to the building's size and position just above the steps, it is impossible to see the entire structure from the front.
The south entrance also features a Zuishinmon Gate, built in 1357 during the early Muromachi period.
It shares the same architectural style and coloring as the north gate.
A corridor extends from the Mikaden Hall near the torii gate to the south Zuishinmon Gate.
This long corridor, designated as an Important Cultural Property by Okayama Prefecture, features carvings on the gable ends.
The corridor is constructed entirely of plain wood without any coloration and spans a total length of 398 meters.
The tiled roof's curvature and the continuous columns along the slope create a beautiful structure.
The large main hall, said to have been built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, measures 14.6 meters in length and 17.7 meters in width, with a ridge height of 12 meters.
It is currently the second-largest shrine building after Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto and more than twice the size of Izumo Taisha.
The roof style, with two consecutive gabled roofs, resembles the katakana character "エ" when viewed from above.
Known as "Hiyoku Irimoya-zukuri," this architectural style is unique to Kibitsu Shrine and is therefore called "Kibitsu-zukuri."
The worship hall projects from the front of the main hall and appears to be integrated with it.
Built at the same time as the main hall, the worship hall is a gabled structure with a hipped roof.
It features a shingled roof and skirts on the front and sides, making it a unique architectural structure not seen elsewhere.
