Torii Gate

The main shrine of all Inari shrines, Fushimi Inari Taisha, is located in Fushimi, Kyoto, with the entire Mount Inari as its sacred precinct.
It is one of the most visited shrines in Japan, known for the continuous rows of torii gates that adorn its pathways.

The shrine is believed to have been established in the 8th century when deities were enshrined on the three peaks of Mount Inari. After the Onin War, a temple called Aizenji was built as part of the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, but the Buddhist elements disappeared after the Meiji period.

Romon Gate

Kaguraden

Passing through the large torii gate at the entrance to the shrine precinct, you are greeted by the vibrant Romon Gate.
The wood is painted bright vermillion, contrasting against the white walls, creating a striking appearance. Behind the gate stands the Kaguraden, followed by the inner worship hall (Haiden).

Inner Shrine

The gabled roof of the inner worship hall is adorned with colorful carvings, and behind it stands the main shrine, which has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.
The main shrine was rebuilt in 1494 after being destroyed during the Onin War.
The wooden structure is painted in vermillion, with a surrounding veranda and screens on the sides. The lattice windows are painted green, enhancing the vibrancy, and golden fittings add to the decoration.

The inner shrine located beside the main shrine was built around the same time.
The shrine grounds extend further back, with torii gates of various sizes lining the approach, leading up the mountain.

Torii Gate

At Fushimi Inari Taisha, torii gates are donated when making wishes, ranging from large gates surrounding the paths to smaller ones placed in front of shrines.
It is said that there are around 10,000 torii gates leading up to Mount Inari, and the densely placed gates on the path known as the Senbon Torii are particularly striking, forming one of the iconic sights of Fushimi Inari Taisha.
