天津神社・奴奈川神社
1-3-34 Ichinomiya, Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture
Amanomiya Shrine in Itoigawa City, together with the precinct shrine Nunakawa Shrine built next to the main hall, is the ichinomiya of Echigo Province.
The main deity of Amanomiya Shrine is Amatsuhikohikohono-ninigi-no-Mikoto.
It is said to have been founded around 130 AD during the reign of Emperor Keiko and has been revered as the guardian deity of this region.
Nunakawahime, enshrined in Nunakawa Shrine, is said to have been the queen of a local ruling family around Itoigawa City.
She is known as the mother of Takeminakata no Mikoto, the deity of Suwa Taisha, who is said to have visited from Izumo to propose marriage.
The shrine has entrances with torii gates on the north, south, and east. The northern torii gate, near Benten Island, has a particularly good atmosphere.
The shrine buildings face south, with a dressing room on the west side and a greenroom and stage in front.
The dance performed on the stage during the April festival is designated as a nationally important intangible cultural property.
The worship hall, built in 1662, stands behind it.
It is a large irimoya-roofed building, with the offering hall added in 1782.
The main hall of Amanomiya Shrine was built in 1797 by Jouzaemon Masanobu Soma, a carpenter from Itoigawa.
The carvings on the transom and the pillars supporting the front eaves, as well as the decorative brackets supporting the eaves, are very impressive.
It is a splendid building made entirely of zelkova wood.
Nunakawa Shrine, built next to the main hall of Amanomiya Shrine.
Compared to the main hall of Amanomiya Shrine, it is a smaller shrine building with walls extending from the eaves to form an enclosure.
It was built in 1798 and originally stood in Yanagiya, Rendaiji, Itoigawa City. It was moved to Yamazaki in the autumn of 1185 and later to its current location.
