Akagi Shrine, located on Ōnuma Pond, a caldera lake near Mount Akagi.
Known as Ōtoge Akagi Shrine due to its location, it is considered the head shrine of approximately 300 Akagi shrines nationwide, along with Miyozawa Akagi Shrine.
In Maebashi City, besides the two Akagi shrines on Mount Akagi, there is Ninomiyama Akagi Shrine, which is also regarded as one of the contenders for the title of main shrine.
Akagi Shrine is situated on an island close to the western shore of Ōnuma. Crossing the bright red bridge and passing through the stone torii, the path continues with views of the lakeside.
The spacious shrine grounds are centered around the main shrine building.
To the left of the worship hall is the purification fountain, while the right side hosts the shrine office. All of the shrine buildings are painted in red.
The windows of the worship hall feature green latticework that complements the red shrine buildings.
The main hall behind the worship hall is a three-bay gabled structure.
The roof features five katsuogi and outward-facing chigi.
A walkway surrounds the building, and there are no side screens.
The architecture is simple, with no significant carvings or elaborate decorations.
