吉田神社
30 Yoshida Kaguraokacho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto
In 859, Fujiwara no Yamakage enshrined the deity from Kasuga Taisha as the guardian of Heian-kyo.
Subsequently, it received reverence as the guardian deity of the entire Fujiwara clan in Heian-kyo.
During the Onin War, Yoshida Shinto was founded, and a subsidiary shrine, Saijōsho Ōmotomiya, was built within the shrine grounds.
Behind the Kagura-den, surrounded by sacred fences, the main shrine comprises four main buildings.
All are in the Kasuga-zukuri style, similar to Kasuga Taisha.
The roofs feature chigi and katsuogi, and the structures are painted vermilion.
Only the front has a veranda and wooden steps.
The subsidiary shrine, Ōmotomiya, enshrines all the gods of Japan.
It is considered the fundamental hall of Yoshida Shinto, with the Hachiman Shrine, originally enshrined in the Imperial Palace, relocated here.
Built in 1601, it features an unusual design with an octagonal main building followed by a hexagonal structure.
The roof is hipped and features chigi, with the front being inward-facing and the back being outward-facing.
A jeweled finial is placed at the roof's center, with square katsuogi at the front and log katsuogi at the back.
This design is said to embody the ideals of Yoshida Shinto, which aimed to integrate various religions and philosophies such as Buddhism, Confucianism, Onmyodo, and Taoism.
It is open for viewing on the first day of each month.
