Ku-1 Jike-machi, Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture
Known as the Ichinomiya of Noto, Keta Taisha is located in Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The shrine enshrines Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto, who was worshipped as the guardian deity after pioneering the Noto Province. Near the sea, it is surrounded by a dense grove known as the Forbidden Forest, designated as a natural monument. The inner shrine is enshrined within this forest, but as the name suggests, entry is prohibited.
At the entrance, there is a large wooden Ryobu torii gate. The well-maintained approach is lined with gravel, and on the right is the shrine office where charms and amulets are sold. In front of the shinmon gate, there are stone steps, with a hand-washing basin (temizuya) on the side. The gate, built in 1584, is a four-legged gate with a gabled roof made of cypress bark, designated as an important cultural property. The shrine buildings are located beyond this gate.
The worship hall at the front of the shrine grounds was built in the early Edo period. Constructed in 1653, it was the work of Yoshizaemon Yamashita, a notable carpenter who left many buildings in Ishikawa Prefecture, including Natadera Temple in Komatsu City and Zuiryuji Temple in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. Known as the chief carpenter for the third lord of the Kaga domain, Maeda Toshitsune. The main hall behind the worship hall is built in the Ryobu-zukuri style. This unique style, where the eaves extend both forward and backward, is rare in Nagano Prefecture and is also seen in Matsuo Taisha in Kyoto and Itsukushima Shrine. The main hall is a large structure with a span of 3 ken and a depth of 4 ken, designated as an important cultural property.
On both sides of the main hall are the Wakamiya Shrine main hall and the Hakusan Shrine main hall. Both are Ryobu-zukuri style shrine buildings designated as important cultural properties, quietly standing with a large forest in the background.
