久保田家の天満宮
5161 Takai, Takayama Village, Kamitakai District
The Tenmangu Shrine stands right next to the parking lot of "Issa Yukari no Sato" in Takayama Village. Kobayashi Issa first visited Takayama Village at the age of 47 and had many disciples in the area. One of his disciples, Harukou Kubota, provided a separate house for Issa during his stay in the village, which has been relocated and preserved at "Issa Yukari no Sato." Harukou Kubota owned a vast land in the area where Tenmangu Shrine was built.
Tenmangu Shrine consists of a gabled roof covering and the main hall within it. In front of the covering, there are remains of the lantern and the foundations where a torii gate once stood. Inside the lattice-windowed doors is the main hall built in the nagare-zukuri style.
The main hall is vibrantly decorated with colors. The round pillars of the main structure are painted black, while square pillars used for the front section are left natural wood. The main structure measures about 1 meter in both width and depth, making it relatively small. It features verandas on the front and sides with side screens.
The frog-leg struts on the main structure are carved with the crest of Sugawara no Michizane, and the beams in the front section are decorated with hanging wisteria, both painted gold. The beams are painted white, contrasting beautifully with the black rafters and the red-painted soffits. The decorative beam carvings feature leaping deer.
The horizontal beams above the frog-leg struts are adorned with patterns rather than carvings, encircling the structure. The gable-end walls feature carvings painted in black, with red-painted elements above the beams.
The side screens on the right feature carvings of colored pines and cranes, while the left side displays bamboo and peonies. Both carvings prominently feature red colors, matching the vibrant atmosphere of the main hall.
