雁田水穂神社
Miyada, Obuse Town, Kamitakai District
Karita Mizuho Shrine, located in the eastern village of Obuse Town known for chestnuts and scenic views, retains a main shrine in the mid-Edo period style.
The gabled worship hall houses the main shrine, an Ikkensha-Nagare-zukuri with wooden shingles.
The layout features a large width with a central pillar at the back and central framework at the front.
Intricate carvings of dragons and waves adorn the shrine, particularly the finely crafted panels of the Seven Lucky Gods on the back and sides.
Such decorative architecture was seen in mid-18th century Nagano Prefecture, and Karita Mizuho Shrine stands out for its identified carpenter and construction date.
The main shrine's pillars and rafters are lacquered black, and the carvings are vividly colored, distinguishing it from later 18th-century decorative shrines with plain wood.
