566 Matsushiro Town, Nagano City
Located in Matsushiro Town, east of Nagano City, Iwai Shrine stands amidst residential areas.
During the Sengoku period, Takeda Shingen built Kaizu Castle here for the Battle of Kawanakajima.
In the Edo period, it became the castle town of the Sanada clan.
The current main hall was built in the 1800s after two fires. Both the main hall and worship hall feature rich local carvings, including lions and dragons on the beam heads and central elements.
The shrine grounds include several other shrines.
These include Nishinomiya Shrine dedicated to Kotoshironushi no Mikoto and Okuninushi no Mikoto, Hachiman Shrine for Emperor Ojin, and Inari Shrine for Ukanomitama no Kami, among others.
