飯縄山頂奥社
Summit of Mount Iizuna
The Okusha (inner shrine) of Iizuna Shrine, located on the southern peak of Mount Iizuna, overlooks the city of Nagano.
It is said that the shrine began around 270 AD, when Iizuna Daimyōjin was enshrined.
Originally, Dainichi Nyorai was worshipped here as the principal deity, but in 1233, the deity Iizuna Daigongen was invited by Itō Hyōbu Dayū Tadatane.
Tadatane’s son, Moritsuna, also entered the mountain, establishing Iizuna's primitive ninjutsu and spreading both the faith and the ninja arts across the country.
During the Muromachi period, the shrine received strong devotion from warriors such as Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, Uesugi Kenshin, Takeda Shingen, and Tokugawa Iemitsu, who made offerings.
The Satomiya (outer shrine) was particularly revered, having been established by Takeda Shingen.
During the Meiji period, despite the confiscation of its lands due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism and the ban on Shugendō, the shrine received the title of Kōsokuho-no-Mikoto Shrine from the Nagano Prefecture government.
The Satomiya is located near Mount Ōmine, while the Okusha is situated at the summit of Mount Iizuna.
The mountain trail serves as the pilgrimage path to the Okusha. After passing through the torii gate and reaching the northern peak of Mount Iizuna, visitors can offer their prayers at the shrine gate, the small shrine, and the main hall.
