Mount Norikura, Kengamine Summit
Located at the summit of Mount Norikura's highest peak, Kengamine.
Like Mount Hakusan and Mount Fuji, it has been revered as a sacred mountain since ancient times, and is mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan).
It is said that in 1181, a retainer of Kiso Yoshinaka climbed the mountain for observation of the Hida Province, built a shrine, and offered a deity statue, naming the shrine Kurakake Shrine.
In the Edo period, the monk Enku also ascended the mountain.
At the base in Nyukawa, Takayama City, there is the Satomiya Shrine, called Itakiso Shrine, which was renamed Norikura Shrine in 1928.
