檜峰神社
Summit of Gongen-dake
Located on the southern side of the summit of Gongen-dake, one of the peaks of Yatsugatake, at an elevation of 2,715 meters.
The shrine is mentioned in the *Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku*, a historical record compiled in the Heian period, where it was granted the rank of *Jugoi-ge*. This indicates that Gongen-dake has been venerated as a sacred mountain since that time.
The enshrined deity is the eight thunder gods (*Hachirai-shin*).
There is also a theory that the name "Yatsugatake" is derived from the enshrined deities.
The shrine consists of a small shrine (*hokora*), with views of Mount Aka-dake to the north and the vast expanses of Nobeyama and Fujimi to the east and west.
Turning around from the shrine, one can see Mount Fuji to the south.
