科野大宮社
2-21-31 Tokida, Ueda City
Located in the Tokida district near the center of Ueda City, the Shinano Kuni Soja Shrine was established during the reign of Emperor Sujin by Takeifurane no Mikoto, who was appointed as the governor of Shinano Province.
Ueda housed the Shinano Provincial Temple and the provincial government office, and this shrine served to perform rituals for the province.
At one time, it was called Soja Omiya due to its status as the Shinano Soja Shrine.
During the Sengoku period, it was known as Omiya Suwa Myojin and was enshrined as the guardian deity of Ueda Castle after it was built by the Sanada clan.
The numerous zelkova trees surrounding the shrine are a natural monument of Ueda City, with the largest tree having a trunk circumference of over 6.5 meters.
Passing through the stone torii gate at the entrance, the worship hall stands directly ahead. Although the shrine grounds are not very large, they house several auxiliary shrines, including Koyasu Shrine and Inari Shrine.
The main hall is entirely painted red and built in the nagare-zukuri style.
The roof is adorned with katsuogi and chigi, and the building measures 3 bays by 2 bays.
While there are no prominent carvings on the side doors, the gable end of the ridge beam features the hollyhock crest of Suwa Taisha.
