Shrine in Oiwake-juku Dedicated to the Fire God
Asama Shrine is located in Oiwake-juku, west of Kutsukake-juku on the old Nakasendo. It is dedicated to the fire god and has been a place for locals to pray for the tranquility of the mountains since the Great Tenmei Famine (1783). On the shrine grounds, a large stone is inscribed with a haiku by Matsuo Basho from "Sarashina Kiko": "Blow away / even the stones / of Asama's typhoon."
The small main hall, built inside a covering, is a cypress-bark roofed Ichigan-sha Nagare-zukuri style. The roof plaque indicates it was constructed in 1751 by carpenter Denshiro, providing insights into mid-18th century northern Saku regional architecture. Unique features include extended parts of the structure above the side screens and spiral patterns on the decorative elements.
