Rare Architectural Style
Largest Five-Bay Shrine in the Prefecture
The Hiyoshi Shrine is located in the village of Aoki, Denno. With a bright red torii gate, the large unpainted wooden shrine stands within a grove of large cedars. To the right of the shrine grounds is a kagura hall. Ascending the stone steps in front reveals the large nagare-zukuri style shrine.
The Hiyoshi Shrine's main hall is a rare five-bay nagare-zukuri style in Nagano Prefecture. The front spans over 8 meters, and the depth is about 4.3 meters. The unpainted wood and the elegant roof slope are notable features.
Notably, there is only one front door, uncommon for main halls, which usually have doors on all bays. The Hiyoshi Shrine's main hall, with doors only on one bay, is unique among five-bay shrines.
The detailed architectural style suggests it was built in the early 15th century and is designated as a Nagano Prefecture Treasure.
