床尾神社
2065 Soga, Shiojiri City
Tokonou Shrine is located in a village near one of Japan's three major archaeological sites, the Hiraide Ruins.
Surrounded by deep cedar forests, the shrine stands quietly with a stone torii gate at the entrance, a kaguraden on the right, and the worship and main halls on the left.
The shrine's kagura is a city-designated cultural property, valuable in tracing folk performing arts.
The main hall stands behind the worship hall, with numerous small shrines beside it.
Enclosed by a fence with a gate at the entrance, the main hall is a single-bay Kasuga-zukuri structure.
Although currently copper-roofed, it was previously said to have a shingle roof.
Unlike other shrines, this structure lacks side panels, similar to the main hall of Tsukiizu Shrine in Shiojiri City.
The main hall's front features a lattice door with an inner door.
Each corner has round columns, and the front lintel has a carved phoenix.
The gable decoration includes a rainbow beam with a decorative bundle, and the eaves are double-layered.
The pent roof has chamfered corner pillars with tapir carvings and joined struts, with leaf carvings on the central beam. The upper rainbow beam has a peony carving.
The use of rainbow-shaped lintels in the main hall is also seen in the main halls of Arare Shrine and Tsukiizu Shrine in Shiojiri City, suggesting it was a common architectural technique in the mid-18th century around Shiojiri.
