御殿山天満宮
Gotenyama, Asama Onsen, Matsumoto City
Located on the northern side of Matsumoto City, nestled in a corner of Asama Onsen.
Surrounded by residential houses and hot spring inns, a narrow, sloped road leads up to the Yakushidō Hall, with a red torii gate standing beside it.
Passing through the gate, the path continues for over 100 meters through the mountain forest, leading to the shrine's main building, which is situated on the sloped mountainside.
Asama Onsen was managed as a bathing facility for the Matsumoto Domain during the Edo period.
In the early Edo period, large amounts of lead were discovered in Ōhiyama, Azumino. To commemorate this blessing, Matsumoto Castle Lord Mizuno had Asama Onsen renovated, and the deity Sugawara no Michizane was enshrined as the guardian deity of the mountain behind the renovated facility.
The main hall behind the worship hall was built in the early Edo period in the *nagare-zukuri* (flowing style) with a single-bay layout.
The Mizuno family crest is attached to the frog-leg struts, and the *nigirihari* beams are decorated with carved motifs of staffs.
The wide chamfered pillars and simple wooden framework retain the architectural features of the period.
