Senkatuzu Shrine is located at the top of Senkatuzu Mountain in the Satoyama District of Matsumoto City.
Although called a mountain, it is a small hill that can be climbed in about 5 minutes on foot, with beautiful cherry blossoms in spring.
This shrine is enshrined as the guardian deity of this district, with Harashima Shrine and Fuji Sengen Shrine located behind the main shrine.
To the north is the Sakino Miya Shrine.
There are two main shrines: Senkatuzu-sha and Senkatuzu-jinja.
Originally, there was only one main shrine, but in 1618, the Senkatuzu Mountain, where the shrine is located, was divided between the Matsumoto Domain and the Takashima Domain of Suwa, with the mountain itself as the boundary.
As a result, the original Senkatuzu Shrine was split into two separate shrines: Senkatuzu-sha in the Hayashi district and Senkatuzu-jinja in the Kanda district.
Both shrines are built in the single-bay flowing style with copper roofs. The main hall of Senkatuzu-sha was constructed by the master carpenter Nakaneya Shichi, who was also known for building the Niomon Gate of Gozu-ji Temple. The outline of the wooden frog is very similar, indicating the Matsumoto style of carpentry.
Senkatuzu-jinja's main hall was built between the 17th and 18th centuries and reflects the style of Suwa carpenters.
