5066 Azusagawa Azusa, Matsumoto City
Hachioji Shrine, located in the former Azusagawa Village.
Nearby stands Omiya Atsuta Shrine, and the surrounding area is filled with fields and farmland.
On the western side of the shrine, there is a steep slope surrounded by a deep sacred grove.
At the top of the stone steps stands a red ryobu torii gate.
The shrine building features a gabled-roofed worship hall (haiden) with a mirror placed behind lattice doors.
Behind the haiden is a single-bay nagare-zukuri main hall (honden).
Built in the mid-Edo period, the structure is made of plain zelkova wood and is richly adorned with carvings.
The main hall's framework features carved motifs, with the forward elements showing two-layer brackets.
Deep relief carvings adorn the beams, frog-leg struts, and decorative end pieces.
The unique method of carving the shapes into the panel at the gable ends is considered a rare technique.
The carving style and plain wood construction share similarities with the Okuma architectural style.
