薮原神社
499-1 Yabuhara, Kiso Village, Kiso District
Yabuhara Shrine, located beside the Chuo West Line, was first enshrined from Kumano by the imperial envoy Mino-Ō in the 9th year of Emperor Tenmu's reign.
It was formerly known as Kumano Shrine, Kumano Daigongen, and Kumano Daijingu.
Renamed Yabuhara Shrine in the 4th year of Meiji, it stands in Yabuhara, Kiso Village.
The first torii is a bright red Ryobu Torii.
It stands midway up the stone steps, clearly visible from the JR line.
At the top of the steps, there is a stone Myojin Torii, with a hand-washing basin and guardian dogs on either side before it.
The shrine building is further up the stone steps beyond the second torii.
Surrounded by a large shrine grove, the shrine building is visible from the base of the steep stone steps.
The worship hall is a large hip-and-gable structure.
Behind it stands a large gabled building with chigi and katsuogi decorations on the roof.
The shrine building stands slightly back from the torii, with the worship hall located high up the stone steps.
The main shrine within is a Mikazukazukuri (flowing style) of three bays.
The construction is in the Tachikawa style, which is rare in the Kiso region.
The structure supporting the purlins features carvings of waves and clouds on two levels of struts.
The main frog legs' carving on the middle support is significantly three-dimensional, protruding from its frame.
The dragon at the rainbow beam position and the chrysanthemum carving on the hand clasp are also notable works.
Next to the worship hall is a long, narrow gabled building.
Inside are multiple shrines, with the central Hachihōsha being an Edo-period building.
The main building of Hachihōsha is supported by round pillars, with the front having double-opening board doors and the rest being boarded walls.
The forward part is composed of chamfered square pillars, with a rainbow beam passing through the wood noses, and a board frog leg in the middle support.
The main building and the forward columns are connected with an ebi-kouryou (shrimp rainbow beam), and the roof is shingled with kokera-buki, with a hanging fish and a five-tiered wooden staircase at the front.
