手習天神
Machigumi, Kiso Town, Kiso District
Along National Route 19 in Kiso Town, Teranashitenjin Shrine stands on the north side of Fukushima-juku in the Machigumi district.
It is said that Nakae Kanehisa, who raised Kiso Yoshinaka, founded the shrine to enshrine the god of learning.
The shrine is not large and is built on a slope surrounded by trees, with a low Myojin torii as the only entrance.
There is a small sumo ring within the shrine grounds, used for the sumo tournament held during the festival on August 24th and 25th every year.
The main shrine building is a one-bay flowing style (nagare-zukuri).
Besides the main shrine, there is only a covering building without walls, allowing a clear view of the main shrine.
Built in the late Edo period, it features carvings of dragons on the front beams and clouds and bamboo on the gable ends.
