八幡神社
3204 Ikeda, Kitaazumi District
Hachiman Shrine is located near the center of Ikeda Town, close to the town hall and junior high school. The shrine was originally established as the tutelary deity of Ikeda Town, with the enshrined deity being Honoikazuchi-no-Mikoto. In 1908, the Twelve Shrines, which worship Haniyasu-hime no Mikoto as the deity of the earth, were merged into Hachiman Shrine. Both are designated cultural properties of Ikeda Town.
The main hall is a single-bay nagare-zukuri style within a protective structure. Although its ornate carvings and painted features are not visible from outside, the distinctive protruding wooden nose and unique shrimp-shaped rainbow beams retain the old regional style.
The Twelve Shrines are housed within the same protective structure, in the sumigi-iri kasuga-zukuri style. They retain strong local architectural styles from the Muromachi period and are similar in form to the main hall of Wakamiya Oji Shrine in Omachi City. These structures are believed to have been built in the Edo period.
