八幡神社
1134-9 Mita, Horigane, Azumino City
Hachiman Shrine is located in the Odatai area of the former Horigane Village.
Every 20 years, the main shrine building is transferred from Hotaka Shrine during its relocation ceremony.
During the 1750 relocation, Odatai Village purchased it from Hotaka Shrine for 4 ryo of gold.
The shrine stands within a community surrounded by fields, enclosed by tall trees, but there appears to be no torii gate at the entrance.
As commonly seen in Azumino, this shrine also has a "Sendo-ishi" (Thousand Times Stone) embedded in front of the worship hall.
Behind the gabled worship hall is the main shrine building, connected by a corridor.
It is considered to be built around 1689, roughly 60 years prior to the 1750 transfer, and follows the Hotaka-zukuri style.
The age is estimated based on characteristics such as the head tie beam’s wood nose, frog leg struts, hand clamps, and the curvature of rafters, with thinner pillars used for the outer worship area. The side panels and rafters were later additions.
It is regarded as the oldest existing main shrine building in the Hotaka-zukuri style.
