Nagare zukuri

Hiyoshi Shrine in Aoki Village

Nagare-zukuri is one of the most common styles of shrine architecture in Nagano Prefecture.
It features a gabled roof with the entrance on the non-gabled side, but what sets it apart is the extended roof at the front.
This extended roof is called "hisashi" or "kōhai."
While much of shrine architecture is said to have been influenced by temple architecture, it is believed that the kōhai of nagare-zukuri originated from shrine architecture.
